Moong dal chilla with curd and a bowl of sprouts on a breakfast table

A breakfast with 15 to 20 g of protein keeps you full until lunch and makes the whole day easier to manage. Here are 21 Indian breakfasts, from chilla and poha to eggs and daliya, each about 215 to 270 calories, with the exact portions.

Why eat protein at breakfast?

Protein digests slowly and keeps hunger hormones calm, so a breakfast with 15 to 20 g of it usually carries you to lunch without biscuits in between. Most Indian breakfasts are mainly grain (poha, upma, paratha); adding curd, sprouts, paneer, dal or eggs is what turns them into a weight-loss breakfast.

How can you add protein to any breakfast?

  1. A katori of curd or hung curd on the side: 5 to 15 g of protein.
  2. A handful of sprouts mixed into poha or upma.
  3. Paneer or tofu bhurji instead of a second paratha.
  4. Besan or moong dal chilla instead of plain dosa.
  5. One or two boiled eggs with your roti or daliya.

Questions people ask

What is the best Indian breakfast for weight loss?

One that combines a grain with a protein: moong dal or besan chilla with curd, poha or upma with sprouts and curd, or eggs with one roti. Each has about 250 kcal and 10 to 19 g of protein.

Is poha good for weight loss?

Yes, in a measured portion. 25 to 40 g of dry poha with vegetables and one teaspoon of oil is about 150 to 185 kcal. Add curd, sprouts or paneer to make it filling.

Can I skip breakfast to lose weight?

You can, if it suits you, but many women then overeat at lunch or in the evening. A planned 250-calorie breakfast with protein usually makes the day easier.

Is oats better than poha?

Both work. Oats have a little more protein and fibre per gram; poha is lighter and very Indian-kitchen friendly. Portion and what you add matter more than the grain.
