How to lose belly fat at home, for women

Belly fat goes the same way as fat everywhere else: slowly, all over the body, when you eat a little less than you use for weeks and months. There is no exercise or drink that burns it from the stomach alone. The good news is that the plan that works is simple, and you can do all of it at home.

Can you lose belly fat at home?

You cannot choose where you lose fat from. When your body uses more energy than you eat, it draws fat from everywhere, in an order set mostly by your genes and hormones. That is why "flat belly in 7 days" plans disappoint. What you can control is the deficit, your muscle and your habits.

What should you do every day to lose belly fat?

1. Eat about 20 to 30% less than you burn

For many women that is 1,300 to 1,600 kcal a day. Work out your number with the calorie calculator.

2. Protein at every meal

Dal, curd, paneer, tofu, sprouts, eggs, chicken or fish. Protein keeps you full and protects your muscle while the fat goes.

3. Cut the sugar you drink

Sweet chai, juices and cold drinks are the easiest calories to remove without feeling hungry.

4. Measure the oil

One teaspoon per meal. Oil is where most hidden calories in Indian cooking come from. See the calorie chart.

5. Strength workouts, 20 minutes a day

Squats, lunges, hip lifts, wall push-ups and planks build muscle, which shapes the waist and uses more energy. Try the 20-minute home workout.

6. Walk after meals and sleep 7 hours

A 10 to 15 minute walk after each meal adds up to about 4,000 steps. Short sleep makes you hungrier the next day.

How do you track belly fat loss?

Questions people ask

How long does it take to lose belly fat?

It varies a lot. At a safe pace of 0.25 to 0.75 kg a week, most women notice their waist and clothes changing within 4 to 8 weeks, often before the scale shows much.

Do crunches reduce belly fat?

Crunches strengthen the stomach muscles but do not burn the fat over them. Full-body strength moves and a calorie deficit are what reduce belly fat.

Why is belly fat the last to go?

Where your body stores and loses fat first depends largely on genes, hormones and age. For many women the belly and hips change last, which is normal.

Does belly fat after a C-section or pregnancy go away?

It can reduce with the same approach, but some stretching of the tummy muscles (diastasis recti) needs specific care. Ask your doctor or a women's health physiotherapist before doing core exercises after pregnancy.
