Calories in chai: with milk, sugar or neither

Two cups of masala chai in steel tumblers with cardamom, ginger and a bowl of sugar

A 150 ml cup of chai made with half toned milk and half water has about 45 kcal without sugar and about 85 kcal with two teaspoons of sugar. Chai itself is not the problem for weight loss. The sugar is: three sweet cups a day add up to about 30 g of sugar, more than the daily limit the WHO suggests.

How many calories are in a cup of chai?

For a normal 150 ml cup. Toned milk has about 58 kcal per 100 ml, and one level teaspoon of sugar (5 g) adds about 20 kcal. Tea leaves and spices such as elaichi and adrak add almost nothing.

A cup of half-milk chai also gives about 2.4 g of protein, and an all-milk cup about 4.8 g. Full-cream milk has more fat than toned milk, so the same cup made with it has more calories.

How much do 3 cups of chai a day add up to?

This is where chai matters. Three cups of half-milk chai with two teaspoons of sugar each:

The same three cups with no sugar come to about 130 kcal, and with half a teaspoon of sugar each about 160 kcal.

How can you cut the sugar in chai without hating it?

  1. Go down slowly. Use half a teaspoon less each week rather than stopping all at once. Your taste adjusts gradually, so small steps are easier to keep.
  2. Measure the sugar. A heaped teaspoon can be nearly double a level one. Use a level teaspoon and the same spoon every time.
  3. Add flavour instead. More adrak, elaichi or a little dalchini makes chai taste fuller with less sugar.
  4. Use toned milk and half water, as most Indian homes already do.
  5. Watch what comes with it. Biscuits, rusk, namkeen and mathri often add more calories than the chai. Check the pack: calories per biscuit are printed on it.

Is chai with gur or honey better for weight loss?

Not for weight. Gur (jaggery) and honey are sugars too, and a teaspoon of either adds calories in a similar way to a teaspoon of sugar. The WHO counts honey as a free sugar to limit. If you prefer the taste of gur, use it, but use less of it.

Should you drink chai with your meals?

The ICMR-NIN dietary guidelines advise against drinking tea or coffee one hour before and after meals, because the tannins in tea can reduce how much iron your body absorbs from food. Iron deficiency anaemia is common among Indian women, so having chai between meals rather than with them is a good habit.

How does chai fit into a weight-loss day?

Comfortably. Two cups of half-milk chai with one teaspoon of sugar each are about 130 kcal, under a tenth of a 1,400 kcal day. Count them as part of the day and the rest of your plate does not need to change. To see how many calories your own day should have, try the BMI and calorie calculator.
